There’s a BMW K100 on craigslist near me “for parts”. It’s got a longitudinally mounted 1000 cc inline 4 that’s layed over on it’s side. It also has an integrated 5 speed gearbox with a driveshaft back to the rear diff mounted in the swingarm.
I’ve always thought this would an interesting engine for a small bike engine’d car project, but can’t decide what I’d put it in. Thoughts?

The only correct answer here.
Although I wouldn’t rule out a stripped out i3.

Believe it or not, the head’s combustion chambers match BMC/BL’s A-series block pretty nicely. There is at least one outfit that sells a conversion kit.
They are usually fitted to Minis, but you could as well install one in a

I noticed it in random craigslist browsing and it caught my eye, but I’m not actually going to get it . I love weird engine swaps and started wondering what it could go into.

That seems terrifying...ly amazing! I’ve ridden a 40 HP shifter cart and it was NUTS. I can’t imagine a 90HP shifter with this thing. Oh man, it could even have a propper rear differential. Hmmm. I just said I wasn’t actually going to get it. Now I’m starting to wonder if it runs and what he’s want for the engine/trans and ECU. Dammit!

In fact some fantastic freaks go one step further – and u s e the 16V head of the K1.
(Someone somewhere should compile a worldwide database of nice-performing engine heads that actually fit OHV blocks rather well. Can you imagine the possibilities for stupid fun we could all have trying to make those mongrels work?)

Head swaps are always interesting to me. I think at some point someone was trying to get Nissan DOHC heads on a SBC. There was also someone at one point chopping up and welding together Quad4 heads to put on the old GM 230/250 inline 6 engines. I’m sure there are other options out there, I agree that it would be cool if there was a database of working combinations.

Yeah, I’m not planning on getting it, I don’t think. I just always thought those were weird engines and this sparked my curiosity.
Of course I told my buddy about it and now he wants to build an unlimited class AutoX car out of it, RHD where the driver sits next to the engine. It would be different for sure but we already have about a zillion project ideas and can’t pin one down yet.

I’ve got a 62 CJ- 6 that has been getting closer to the front of the line project-wise. It needs a new driveline to function and I was leaning towards a 13b, but that’s an interesting thought. A shaft-drive motorcycle engine...
